I Can Read Books Celebrates 60th Anniversary!

By Natasha Bland May 22, 2017

I am sure like me you can all recall your favorite book as a child and it is very likely that for many of you that would include an I Can Read Book!  I Can Read! books are specifically made for children who are learning how to read. Started in 1957, the series has been around for 60 years and helped generations of readers develop a love for books.

What you may not have noticed as a child is the color coded reading levels designed to keep reading challenging but not overwhelming:

  • Yellow ~ My First: SHARED READING: The first step to helping children become great leaders is reading aloudto them. Basic language, word repetition, and whimsical illustrations are ideal for sharing with your emergent reader.
  • Blue ~ Level 1: BEGINNING READING: For readers who are beginning to sound out words and sentences.
Short sentences, familiar words, and simple concepts for children eager to read on their own.
  • Red ~ Level 2: READING WITH HELP: For readers who are increasingly confident but still need some help.
Engaging stories, longer sentences, and language play for developing readers.
  • Green ~ Level 3: READING ALONE: Fun subjects kids love to read on their own. Complex plots, challenging
vocabulary, and high-interest topics for the independent reader.
  • Purple ~ Level 4: ADVANCED READING: For kids who are well on the road to becoming book lovers. Short
paragraphs, chapters, and exciting themes provide the perfect bridge to changer books

I love the classic titles and enjoy reading them to my children as my parents did with me. I'll share a little secret of my soon to be high school graduate... He fell in love with Danny The Dinosaur just as his father had done before him :)

Every I Can Read! book focuses attention on language, simple sentence structure, engaging stories told through action and dialogue, and words that children can sound out and read themselves. There are over 400 books available for your child to choose from so I am sure they will find many too love! There are plenty of popular characters featured in the series include classics such as Amelia Bedelia, Danny and the Dinosaur, Frog and Toad, and Little Bear; contemporary characters include Pete the Cat, Pinkalicious, Fancy Nancy, The Berenstain Bears, Little Critter, Superman, Batman, and many more.

The I Can Read Website (www.ICanRead.com) offers loads of opportunities to expand your childs reading with worksheets, online games, and tips for parents and educators.
